EIN

Also known as: Employer Identification Number, Federal Tax ID

identifier

A nine-digit number issued by the IRS that identifies a US business entity for tax purposes. Required to file Form 5472, open a US bank account, and submit most US tax forms.

Full entry

Format

Nine digits in the form XX-XXXXXXX. The first two digits identify the IRS office that issued it.

How you get one

  • US applicants with an SSN or ITIN: apply online at IRS.gov; the EIN is issued immediately.
  • Non-US applicants without an SSN or ITIN: apply by fax using Form SS-4; takes 4–8 weeks typically. Phone application is restricted to US-residents-of-record.

What you receive

An EIN assignment letter: either CP 575 (first issue) or 147C (duplicate on request).

Why it matters for 5472

Your legal name and EIN on Form 5472 must match the EIN letter exactly. One of the fastest ways to get a 5472 rejected is a mismatch between the LLC’s legal name as registered with Delaware and the name on the CP 575.
