Form 7004

Need more time? File the extension in minutes.

Form 7004 extends your Form 5472 + pro-forma 1120 by six months, giving you until 15 October for a calendar-year LLC.

At a glance

The timeline.

  1. 01 15 April

    Original due date

Last chance to buy a 7004 extension. The filing must be transmitted to the IRS on or before this date.

  2. 02 15 April → 15 October

    Six-month runway

Time to gather statements, confirm transactions with the owner, and schedule EA/CPA review without the deadline pressure.

  3. 03 15 October

    Extended due date

The 5472 + pro-forma 1120 must be in the IRS's hands by this date — no further extension is available for this return.

When to use it

File 7004 if you can't gather statements or review in time.

Good reason

You're still waiting on a bank statement

Banks occasionally delay year-end statements, especially for closed accounts. Buying six months lets us wait for the real document rather than estimating.

Good reason

An intake question is genuinely unclear

Classifying a borderline transaction (e.g. an owner's loan vs. equity contribution) sometimes needs a short EA/CPA call. Better to extend and get it right.

Pragmatic

You're abroad on the deadline week

Filing a 5472 is not something to e-sign from a train. Extending to October gives you a quieter window to review and sign.

Not a reason

You owe tax and are hoping for more time

Form 7004 extends time to file, not time to pay. If a real 1120 is due, estimated tax is still due 15 April. For a pro-forma 1120 on a disregarded entity this usually doesn't apply.

Confirmation stored

Fax, receipt, and audit trail — on your filing.

Every 7004 goes out by fax and the confirmation page is attached to your filing record. If the IRS later asks whether you filed an extension, you have the proof in one click.

FAQ

Form 7004 questions, answered.

What is Form 7004?

An application for an automatic extension of time to file certain US business returns, including the pro-forma 1120 that accompanies Form 5472 for a foreign-owned disregarded entity.

How long is the extension?

Generally six months — moving a calendar-year filing from 15 April to 15 October.

Does an extension of time to file also extend time to pay?

No. Any tax owed is still due at the original filing deadline. For a zero-activity foreign-owned disregarded entity this is typically not an issue, but confirm with your CPA.

Can I file 7004 after the deadline?

No. Form 7004 must be filed on or before the original due date of the return to be effective. BorderFile locks new 7004 purchases once the original date has passed to avoid charging you for something that cannot work.

How is it filed?

Filed electronically or by fax/mail depending on the return it extends. For 5472 paired with a pro-forma 1120, we file by fax and store the confirmation.

What if my 7004 is rejected?

Rejections are rare and almost always administrative (name/EIN mismatch). If it happens we correct and refile at no additional cost before the original deadline where possible.

Does filing 7004 raise an audit flag?

No. Form 7004 is a routine administrative filing. The IRS does not treat on-time extension filings as a risk signal.

File the extension before the deadline.
